Chapter 3 Welcome to Diagon Alley
The girls decided to go down stairs to tell Daphne and Harvey about the letter. When they got down there, however, they saw Daphne, Harvey and Hilary’s mum, Natalie, were all sitting around the table. They looked like they had been doing some serious talking. “So, you’ve finished telling her?” said Natalie, it was a question not a statement, “I have talked to Daphne and Harvey and they have said that you can come with me and Hilary to Diagon Alley, in England. We will stay for the night and get your school stuff there.” Jiara couldn’t believe it, she was going to England! Half an hour later, Jiara was at Hilary’s house waiting for her to finish packing her stuff for the trip. “Done,” Hilary said suddenly straightening up from her backpack. “Hey, Hilary,” said Jiara, “how are we getting to Diagon Alley? I mean, we’re not going to fly on broomsticks or something, are we?” “No, of course not silly! We’re getting there by magic,” replied Hilary. “But, there are muggles there, aren’t there?” Jiara insisted. “No there aren’t,” said Hilary, “if there were muggles there then they wouldn’t be able to sell magic stuff, would they? Come on, mum will want to leave soon.” The girls ran down the stairs and 10 minutes later, were standing in the living room in front of the fire place. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* “So, all I have to do is drop this dust stuff, step in the fire, and say ‘Diagon Alley’?” said Jiara as she stood near the fireplace a while later. “Yep, that’s right; you’ll be fine,” replied Mrs Ledech, “Hilary will go first to show you just how to do it, alright?” Hilary stepped up to the fireplace and promptly dropped a handful of the shiny dust into the fire, which turned a dazzling emerald green. She stepped smartly into the middle and shouted, “Diagon Alley!” before whooshing away with a spin. “You see, nothing to it dear,” said Mrs Ledech, “Your turn now.” “Okay, here goes,” said Jiara as she threw the Floo powder into the fireplace. She stepped carefully into the fire, expecting it to be hot, but was surprised to find that it was quite cool. Then, taking a deep breath she said clearly, “Diagon Alley!” and she was suddenly off! Jiara spun around and around and around until she thought she would be sick. Then, as suddenly as it had started, she stopped spinning and toppled out of the fireplace of a dingy looking pub. Hilary had just helped her up when they were joined by Mrs Ledech. As soon as she got up, Mrs Ledech pulled out her wand, waved it at Jiara and said, “Scourigfy!” and all of the soot that had been covering her, disappeared. Mrs Ledech then turned to Hilary and did the same thing to her, then herself. When she was done, she led the girls to the bar and asked the bartender, who was bald and looked a lot like a gummy walnut, for a room for the night. They took their stuff up to their room then went to the back door of the pub. Outside was just a small paved courtyard enclosed by brick walls. Mrs Ledech went to the wall to the back and tapped a brick with her wand, which she still had in her hand. The brick jiggled and wriggled and soon had gone completely to the other side of the wall. Then the hole made by the brick grew bigger and bigger until it was big enough for them to walk through. The curving bustling street behind was incredible. Mrs Ledech’s voice broke into Jiara’s thoughts as she said, “Welcome to Diagon Alley!” As they walked down the street, Jiara looked this way and that while wishing she had about ten more eyes so that she could see everything at once. Then, the most horrible thought crossed Jiara’s mind, I don’t have any money! Jiara turned to Mrs Ledech and said, “Mrs Ledech how am I to pay for all my school stuff? I don’t have any money,” “Don’t you worry about that Jiara, you’ll have some. Our first stop is Gringotts bank,” Mrs Ledech pointed to a towering white marble building. It looked faintly familiar to Jiara but she lingered on the thought only for a second before putting it to the back of her mind. Hilary, Jiara and Mrs Ledech walked up the marble steps and came to a set of burnished bronze doors, which they were bowed through by goblins wearing scarlet and gold. Inside the doors was another set of doors, silver this time and they were engraved with words:
Enter, stranger, but take heed Of what awaits the sin of greed For those who take, but do not earn, Must pay most dearly in their turn, So if you seek beneath our floors A treasure that was never yours, Thief, you have been warned, beware Of finding more than treasure there.
Jiara read this and shivered when she saw another pair of goblins ready to bow them through the silver doors. When she passed through the doors, Jiara found herself in a high roofed brightly lit marble room. There was a long counter running along the wall to the right and on the left the wall was lined with countless doors. The most amazing thing though, was the amount of goblins there were! There were goblins behind the counter, writing, weighing and examining. And there were even more taking people in and out of the doors on the left wall. The girls followed Mrs Ledech to the counter. Mrs Ledech stepped up to a spare goblin and said, “I would like to make a withdrawal from the Ledech vault and the vault of Jiara Potter.” The goblin called to another, Griphook, who led them to a door. When Jiara stepped through the door, she expected to see more marble but instead, she was in a tunnel of rough stone with a track running down the middle. Griphook whistled and a cart came trundling up the track and stopped right in front of them. When they had all climbed into the cart, the goblin said, “To vault 222!” as soon as he said this, the cart jumped and started to rattle down the tracks. The cart must have known its own way because Griphook wasn’t steering. Soon the cart slowed to a stop and they all clambered out next to a door with the numbers 222 over the top. Griphook suddenly grabbed Jiara’s hand and waddled to the vault. Jiara was astounded at his strength. When they reached the vault door, Griphook pushed Jiara’s hand into a handprint in the middle, her hand fitted perfectly. As soon as her hand was in the handprint, the door glowed plum purple, then simply melted away. “If anybody except you did that,” said the goblin, “they would be zapped and would die before they hit the ground.” But Jiara wasn’t listening, she was too busy looking at the contents of her vault. There were rows of gold coins, columns of silver coins, heaps of bronze coins -and a small package wrapped in gold. Jiara picked up the package, it had a letter attached. She decided to wait until she got to the Leaky Cauldron to open it. Jiara then turned to Mrs Ledech and asked, “What am I going to put my money in?” “I have a bag you can use,” said Hilary and she handed Jiara a small drawstring bag. “Thank you,” she said. Hilary helped Jiara dump some of the money in the bag. As they did this, Hilary said, “The bronze ones are called Knuts, the silver are Sickles and the gold ones are Galleons. There are seventeen Sickles to a Galleon and twenty-nine Knuts to a Sickle. It’s not too hard to remember, though, it took me two years to get it right the first time.” At this Jiara laughed. When they had filled the bag, Jiara pulled it closed, picked up the package and climbed into the cart with the goblin, Hilary, and her mother. As soon as they were all in the cart it trundled off again, this time to the Ledech’s vault, 126. Soon they were back at the vast marble hall. When they got outside they found that it was actually quite late. “We’ll go to the Leaky Cauldron and then get all your stuff tomorrow girls,” said Mrs Ledech. They had dinner at the pub then went to bed in their room. When Jiara got in the room she took the gold package out of the bag she had been carrying and took off the envelope. When she was little she had been taught to read the letter first. She opened the letter and read -
Dearest Jiara, Hello honey, if I am correct, it should be your 11th birthday today, or at least soon - and I will not be with you. Happy Birthday! This gift is an heirloom of my family. It has special powers that can do evil if in the wrong hands. This is why your vault is different from most. You must look after this with your life and only use it when you are in grave danger. There are a couple of things I need to tell you. First, do not let any one else touch it, it could do severe harm. For this reason, do not tell any one about it, no one but you, your father, Professor Dumbledore, the teachers at Hogwarts and I know about it and it needs to stay that way, at least until you get married. Secondly, I have attached it to a chain so you can have it with you always, once you put it on, never take it off. And third, I must tell you of the special powers it holds and how to use it. As soon as you touch it, you will feel serge of power flow through you and then you will feel weak. You will also notice a shape burned on the palms of your hands that should resemble a flame, just like the charm. I would advise that you don’t put it on until you are at Hogwarts so that Professor Dumbledore will know and if you faint he can help you. The powers are strong and are triggered by extremely strong emotions. These powers are almost limitless but these are the main ones. Making wishes come true, making fake things real, serges of harmful energy and visions of you and others you know. If you have these dreams, speak to Dumbledore straight away. To deal with the power serges, when you are getting too emotional, go outside and blast a couple at the lake. As for the others, just keep wishing to a minimum and you should be right. Well I think that is all the important things. Just remember that I have only listed a few of the powers and if anything strange happens that I haven’t said, like I keep saying, tell Dumbledore, he’ll sort it out. I need to finish this letter but I just want to tell you that your father and I love you and so does Harry, your brother. Have a wonderful birthday sweetheart. Yours sincerely, Love Your mother, Lily Potter.
When Jiara finished reading the letter she was astounded. She wanted nothing more than to open the package and look at the necklace but the words of her mother rang in her head, do not tell any one about it, it could hurt them. She decided to wait until she was alone or maybe until she was at Hogwarts. So, Jiara put the gift into her bag and went to sleep. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Chapter 4 Meetings
Jiara was woken by Hilary, who was sitting on her bed tickling her. “Stop it Hilary, stop it!” Jiara cried between gasps of giggles, “You know I’m really ticklish so stop it!” “Okay, but you need to get up sleepy head, its 9’oclock already!” said Hilary with a smile. Jiara jumped out of bed and put on her new outfit. Then she and Hilary went down stairs to join Mrs Ledech for breakfast. After breakfast, Mrs Ledech turned to them and said, “You girls can walk around Diagon Alley, but Diagon Alley only, you hear that Hilary? I’ll meet you back here at 4, and you’ll need to have all your stuff by then.” The girls walked out of the pub with Mrs Ledech were she tapped the wall to let them through and they walked down the street. “So,” said Jiara, taking her school envelope and pulling the list of items they needed for school, “let’s go to…the robe shop first.” The girls went into the robe shop called Madam Malkin’s Robes for All Occasions were they got sized up for their robes. Next the girls went and bought their wands. They walked out of Ollivanders, the wand shop, carrying their new wands. Jiara’s was yew, unicorn hair, 7 ½ inches, Hilary’s was maple, phoenix feather, 11 inches. The girls were just about to go to the book shop, Flourish and Blotts, they heard a voice behind them shout, “Oi! Hilsy!” Hilary and Jiara turned around and saw three boys of about their age, running towards them. When Hilary saw them, she ran up to them and cried, “Aaron, Scott, Brett, Hi!” then she gave each of them a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Aaron and Scott looked curiously at Jiara and Hilary said, “Oh, how rude of me, Jiara this is Aaron Lupin,” the boy Hilary had hugged first took Jiara’s hand and kissed it. “It is a wonderful day when god blesses one to meet one of his angels,” he smiled. Aaron was a really attractive guy. He had brown hair that had natural blond all through it. Aaron’s blue eyes twinkled mischievously when he smiled and he was tall and medium in size, and had a nice sun-tan. “This is Scott Arnett,” Hilary continued, pointing to the next boy. He too took Jiara’s hand and kissed it and said, “It’s a pleasure to meet you Jiara.” Scott looked similar to Aaron, but his eyes were green and he was musclier. “And this is Brett Paramage.” Hilary finished motioning to the last boy. Brett kissed Jiara’s hand also but he didn’t say anything. Brett was completely different from the other two, he had sandy blond hair and grey eyes which were secretive and he wasn’t as tall as the other boys. When the introductions were finished, the group went and did the rest of their shopping. The whole time, Hilary noticed that Aaron and Scott and Brett, occasionally, kept stealing glances at Jiara. They like her, thought Hilary. While Hilary was thinking, Jiara was talking to Aaron, and Brett was giving him deadly stares which just confirmed her assumptions because Jiara didn’t notice at all. Just before the girls had to go to the Leaky Cauldron, they all decided to go to the pet shop, Magical Menagerie. They walked in and the first thing Jiara saw was the most beautiful snowy owl. She was small for an owl, but snow white in colour and right in the middle of her chest, there was a sparkling silver formation. Jiara’s eyes widened as she realised what the shape was: a shimmering spark of flame. “Hey, Jiara, I’ll buy you an owl for your birthday, you choose one and I’ll buy it, what do you think - Jiara?” Hilary looked at Jiara and saw that she was transfixed on something. She looked up and saw the owl. “I can see that you’ve chosen already,” she said and went over and bought the bird. “So, what are you going to call her?” asked Hilary as they walked out of the shop, Jiara clutching the beautiful bird in a cage. “Shimmar,” replied Jiara, “Her name is Shimmar.” Soon, 4:00 came and Jiara and Hilary had to go back to the Leaky Cauldron. Before they left, the boys gave Jiara and Hilary a hug good bye. “See you at school!” they called as they left. The girls went inside and found Mrs Ledech. They went over to the fireplace, got their floo powder and left for home. As she took her floo powder, Jiara decided, that she definitely did not like travelling via the fireplace. When they were all back at the Ledech house they got straight in the car and drove Jiara home. Jiara’s parents made such a fuss when Jiara got home. They spent half an hour telling her how proud they were and how pleased they were and that they would gladly help her with anything they could for her to continue learning magic. Jiara only stayed and listened to them to be polite but she really wanted to just go to her room and look at her present from her mother. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

there seems to be no one in here lately!! oh well - nother post!! ;D Chapter 5 The Journey from Platform 9 ¾
When Jiara finally got to her room, she decided against looking at her necklace, there was too much risk of her touching it and she didn’t want to hurt herself and get Daphne and Harvey worried about her. Besides, if she fainted, they would take her to the hospital and she definitely didn’t want that, what if they found out? The last few days of the holidays went by surprisingly quickly. Jiara spent each day studying her text books by herself or with Hilary sometimes. Soon enough, 1 September came. Jiara had arranged with Hilary to go with her to platform 9 ¾ to catch the school train. They decided that, even though Jiara didn’t like it, they would get there by Floo powder. So, when Jiara turned up at Hilary’s house, she was wearing just a pair of jeans and a shirt. Nothing new or fancy. They had decided that they would change into their school robes on the train so they wouldn’t get dirty. The trip to Platform 9 ¾ was the same as their last trip, except they came out at a different fireplace. When Jiara got out, the first thing she saw was a gleaming scarlet steam train with silvery smoke swirling gently from its funnel. The smoky haze itself seemed almost magical in the way that it swirled around all the people and made things look like they were disappearing as they went further away from her. When Hilary and her mum joined Jiara, they set off down the train looking for an empty compartment. They finally found one right near the end of the train and were just starting to drag their trunks up the stairs when they heard a shout from behind them. “Hilary, Jiara!” the girls turned to find Aaron and Scott running towards them, their trolleys tumbling behind them dangerously. “Woo, slow down there!” Jiara called with a grin. Hearing this, Aaron instantly came to a near complete halt, startling Scott who tripped on Aaron’s trunk in his haste to stop and came crashing to the ground. In an effort to stop himself falling, he grabbed Aaron’s coat and brought him tumbling on top of him. Jiara and Hilary just stood in place, staring at the boys before they burst into laughter. “You… you id…iots,” Hilary gasped. Aaron gave a disgruntled grunt as he sat up and dusted off his jacket. “Thanks a lot, Scott, what’d’ya have to go and do that for?” “ME?!” Scott retorted, “You’re the one who came to a dead stop right in front of me!” “Yeah, yeah, come on guys, it was an accident,” consoled Jiara as she held out a hand to help Aaron get up. After they got the mess sorted and their trunks were neatly stored into the luggage racks, Hilary and Jiara went out and said goodbye to Mrs Ledech. “Make sure you two keep out of mischief,” she said as she brandished her finger playfully at them. “And don’t go mixing with too many riff-raff.” She glanced conspiratorially at the boys, just as Brett arrived. Hilary smiled and gave her a hug. “Don’t worry mum, we’ll be fine.” Mrs Ledech just grinned in return. The whistle was now blowing for all the students to get on the train. Quickly, the girls ran up the stairs and into the compartment, and waved goodbye out the window. The train got faster and faster and eventually turned a bend, leaving the station out of sight. “Well,” sighed Jiara, “what do we do now?” The others shrugged and sat in silence for a few minutes before the boys started talking about Quidditch. Knowing nothing about the sport, Jiara just sat back and watched as the scenes of England flashed by. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

At midday, when the scenery had long faded into rolling hills full of cattle and sheep, there was a knock on the door. When they opened it, they found a lady who was standing behind a trolley full of lollies and other treats. Jiara was hungry and got out her money, went out to the trolley and was quite surprised. There was nothing there that was familiar to her at all, not even a Mars Bar! Jiara got over her shock quickly and bought a bit of everything because she didn’t want to miss out on anything. The group then enjoyed a while eating lollies and talking about what they were looking forward to most in their magical education. Eventually, Scott stood up. “I’m going up front to see how long it will be until we get to the school.” Five minutes later he returned and told them they’ll be there soon so they should get dress into their robes. They took it in turns, first the girls, then the boys, to get changed. When they were all back together, they sat quiet; they were all apprehensive about what they would find at Hogwarts. The train soon stopped at a station and they all walked onto the tiny platform. When they got off the train, they heard a loud voice shouting over the crowd, “Come on, firs’ years this way! Any more firs’ years? Come along, come along, and hurry up the rest of yeh! Firs’ years this way!” they turned towards the voice and saw a gigantic man towering over the crowd of students holding a lantern. He had a shaggy beard and mane of tangled hair. He must have been at least the height of two men and the width of three, with hands the size of dustbin lids and feet like small baby dolphins. Jiara, Hilary, Aaron, Scott and Brett stared at each other in wonder before they fought their way through the crowd to the giant. Soon after the group of friends joined the giant, he asked them all to follow him. As he led them down a sloping dirt track, the giant introduced himself. “I’m Rubeus Hagrid, jus’ call me Hagrid, everyone else does,” he said in his gruff tone. From a distance, Hagrid had looked quite fearsome but his beetle black eyes spoke in volumes from the way they crinkled in a gentle and kind manner when he smiled behind his fierce beard. After about 15 minutes of walking, the group of first years turned a corner and got their first glance at Hogwarts. There was a lake in between them and the school. The turrets and towers sat on a cliff looking over the lake which was smooth as glass. At the edge of the lake there was a small fleet of row boats. They all climbed into a boat. Jiara got in a boat with Hilary and, to the other boys’ annoyance, Scott. As soon as everyone was in a boat, Hagrid shouted out, “Forward!” and the boats started to skid along the water towards the cliff. When they reached the cliff, Hagrid shouted out to all of them, “Mind yer ‘eads! The entrance is a bi’ low!” they all ducked and the boats continued to glide through the large hole in the cliff which was hidden from view by vines.
